RED MERANTI TYPES: Listed Below

NORMAL RED MERANTI:

SCIENTIFIC NAME- SHOREA SPP.

CHARACTERISTICS:

Color/Appearance: Color can be highly variable depending upon the species: ranging from a pale straw color, to a darker reddish brown.

Weight/ Density: The average weight found in normal red meranti is around 18-20 kgs/ cubic feet.

Workability: Typically easy to work, due to its low density. Though some rough or ragged surfaces may be left while sanding, and it may be necessary to sand up to a finer grit to obtain a satisfactory finish. 

Common Uses: Plywood, interior furniture, general construction, concrete forms, as well as a number of other general utility purposes.

RED SINKER MERANTI:

CHARACTERISTICS:

Color/Appearance: Typically a dark reddish or purplish brown; commonly with white resin streaks present.

Weight/ Density: The average weight found in sinker red meranti is around 27-30 kgs/ cubic feet.

Workability: Typically easy to work, though any interlocked grain can present problems during planing, and Dark Red Meranti is reported to have very poor steam-bending properties.

Common Uses: Jammers, door frames, interior furniture, general construction, concrete forms, veneer, and boatbuilding.

SUPER RED MERANTI:

CHARACTERISTICS:
Color/Appearance: Color can be medium red depending upon the species: ranging from normal good red, to a slightly darker red.

Weight/ Density: The average weight found in super red meranti is around 23-25 kgs/ cubic feet.

Workability: Typically easy to work, due to its low density. Some species may have a slight blunting effect on tools due to small levels of silica present in the wood. Glues, stains, and finishes well.

Common Uses:  interior furniture, general construction
